Terrorism and the Media

My Plan:

Nowadays terrorism is so prevalent in our world, therefore it is so reported in our media. I plan to research and bring to light how the media affect terrorism or vice versa. Since our new modern day world is so oversaturated, it is affecting many things, which includes new aspects of terrorism. Initially, I was going to research terrorism that was underreported but found lack of sources I could use to prove my point. Here is the process I went through to finish my capstone paper.

(Pre-Write) How Will I Attain My Knowledge?

I will be watching documentaries and reading books regarding terrorism but not in the middle-east. It would be interesting to find a documentary about how to Middle-East is in the limelight of terrorism and how that effects the all of the other terrorism acts. I will also look into taking an online coursa course at the University of Maryland. Some of the current research I found are:

TERRORISM in East Africa (al-Shabaab)

My Captstone Paper:

In my capstone paper, I talk about how terrorism has gotten worse because of the media and all the factors that go into my decision. Such examples include cyberterrorism, recruitment through social media, news networks skewing facts, etc. Here is a brief introduction to my paper:

(Post-Write) How I did attain my knowledge:

I used numerous primary sources such as books and websites to calculate the correct trends, statistics, and facts that would help my argument true. Some sources may include:

- Media, Terrorism, and Theory (book) edited by Anandam P. Kavoori

- Terrorism in the Media (Published by the United Nations

- Donald Trump Tweets

- NPR

Introduction:

The viewpoint of security and terror changed on September 11th, 2000. Ever since Bin Laden and the terrorist group, al-Qaeda, flew American Airlines flights 11 and 175 into the Twin Towers, America was plagued by a new modern day terrorism. Not only was it a different form of terrorism, but it was during the new growth phases of the media and especially the usage of social media and the Internet. Although social media was not as developed or accessible in 2000, it still progressed and revolutionized how it is used today, however, it does not end here. In recent trends, terrorism has been increasingly getting worse in America in ways in its violence, frequency, and publicity. Deaths from terrorism since the year 2000 have jumped up tens of thousands and such deaths did not consist from just United States, but all over the world. A new form of terrorism has developed -  terrorist organizations can now target Americans to kill Americans. The initial goal of terrorism was to destroy the image of the United States and to instill fear from the outside. These terrorist groups were primarily regional in the Middle-East, and the United States government enacted war with these Countries to fight back. Now, terrorist organizations are experimenting with different tactics of destroying America from the inside out, telling and teaching Americans to inflict terror on one another. This makes terrorism a lot harder to end because it is sporadic and there is no easy solution. If nothing is done, the trend can continue to get worse and bring upon worse tragedy. Even though the media helps bring awareness to terrorism, the news, social media, and how the media distorts the viewer’s reality has caused terrorism to fragment and increase, becoming more prevalent in the modern world.
